I am in Astana. The city is celebrating their 10th anniversary as the capitol of the country and there are events every day until July 6 (which is also the president’s birthday).
Also, I have some friends from other places arriving this weekend and so I am here to meet them. They will be visiting several cities in the country.
The city is full of people and there are celebrations everywhere. It should be a fun weekend!

This morning I was reading the headlines from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. I ran across a story about a landmark burger shop in Jacksboro.
I spent 7 years of my life in Jacksboro. I really loved that place. A small town where everyone knew everyone. I know that can cause problems (gossip, etc), but sometimes it is great as well. I fondly remember my time in Jacksboro.
I remember starting school in the first grade there (Kindergarten didn’t exist yet). Ms. Tillman was my teacher. She was firm, but did we love her!
There were some great hamburger stands near the school. All three schools (elementary, junior and high) sit on a plot of land on the west side of town. I got to eat burgers at those stands from time to time.
Which leads me to the story I read this morning. As a child, my father loved eating at the Green Frog. I remember when Dairy Queen came to town. We would eat ice cream there, but our food came from Green Frog. I faintly remember Herd’s Burgers, sitting on Main street just off the main square.
After I moved back to Wichita Falls in 1985 to attend Midwestern State University, I would eat at Herd’s every time I drove through Jacksboro. The last time was probably in 2002. I wasn’t a regular like those mentioned in the article, but I remember the smell of the room and the taste of the burgers. Time marches on…

Get set to ride! Saturday morning as I was in my kitchen I heard a familiar sound of a band warming up. I looked out the window and saw lots of bicyclist riding around, warming up.
I decided to dress and take a walk to see what was happening. There was a small ceremony across the street from my apartment. I learned that Karaganda was hosting the national bicycle championships.

The last photo is of a billboard next to my apartment building. It say, “With Love Astana”. Astana is beginning a grand 10th anniversary celebration as the new capital starting Monday, June30 and lasting through Sunday, July 6. There are signs all over Karaganda wishing Astana happy anniversary.

“In the end” the kitchen, after more than 4 months, is finally finished (not withstanding some decor touches)! The cabinet guy came on Monday and changed out the door that was not the right size. Then I had to change the doors on the refrigerator so they would open up correctly (which took some time…). Then on Tuesday and Wednesday Misha and Sasha had to deal with the radiator. [Read more →]

There is a website that has many of the SBC bloggers listed in one place. It is a great place to find out what fellow Baptists around the world are thinking and saying. Check it out here. I will also add it to sites I visit…

The last little bit of remodeling could only take place after the heating was turned off in the apartment. The radiators needed to be cleaned out which required Misha and Sasha to return to my apartment.
They came last Friday and removed all 4 of the radiators with no problem. They returned on Tuesday morning, expecting a few hours job. Well… it didn’t exactly turn out that way… [Read more →]

I downloaded House MD, season 3 a few weeks ago. I have watched the first 6 or 7 episodes already and it seems like it is going to be a great season. It’s great that they are weaving this cop through the season thus far. I’m not sure how this is going to turn out but I feel for his “friend” who had is funds frozen.
Wow! It makes me want to watcht the next show now to see what is going to happen… however, it is bedtime!

Sunday, June 22 featured a wedding at church. Baptist weddings usually take place during the second hour of the morning service. I took some photos today, but was video taping much of the time so I did not get a photo of the bride and groom.

The couple usually hosts a lunch after the service. The room was definitely PINK! Wow, it was bright!

During the Soviet Union time, many (if not all) people had summer houses and gardens. People used these places to raise fruits and vegetables to supplement their food during the long winters. Today many people just do not have the time or interest in a summer garden.
One of my neighbor’s, Nina, invited me to her summer house to check on the progress. We drove out there on Saturday. Here are a few photos…

Potatoes are the biggest garden land grabber. Other plants have their place as well. The third photo is of strawberries. Can you see them? I have some in my refrigerator from this garden! The last photo is of Nina (my neighbor) and Galina (her niece).
