More than 25 years ago I sensed God desiring me to do something different with my life.
I had taken a job at the Dallas Times Herald in October 1991, working in their advertising department. Less than two months later, the owner sold the Times Herald to the competition and the newspaper published it’s last edition on December 9, 1991.
To say I was shocked would be an understatement. I knew that I had felt God leading me to take the job in Dallas, yet, two months later I found myself jobless. The only thing I knew for sure was that I needed to seek God’s direction. I spent hours a day reading God’s Word and praying.
In May 1992, I felt God leading me to become a missionary. At that particular moment, I didn’t know for sure what that meant or what it looked like. I just felt the Holy Spirit moving me in that direction.
Today’s Bible reading brought me to Genesis 12. It is the story of God moving Abram from the one place where he felt secure, where he had roots, where he had family. Verse 1 says that God wanted him to go “to the land that I will show you.” In verse 4 we learn that Abram went. Just like that, no long discussions, no months/years of planning. He just went.
Most of us are not in a position to just go like Abram did, but I know that the Lord is still calling people to follow Him, to listen to His voice, to go.
One aspect of my ministry that I love is talking with young people who are sensing that call on their lives. It is amazing that the Lord is challenging Ukrainians to go to “a land that God will show.”
One, not so young, pastor friend is praying about moving to another country, on another continent. He shared with me recently that he felt that the Lord is asking him to be an example for his church! What a witness that would be for his family and for his church!
Not all of us are asked to be like Abram, or even like my pastor friend. But, God is asking His church to serve!
God’s call in Matthew 28:19 is for us to go and make disciples of all nations. Each Christ follower needs to ask the Lord what that looks like in his/her life. Are you ready to listen and heed the voice of God? Are you prepared to go wherever the Lord leads? Are you prepared to make disciples… in all nations?
