Today was “first bell.” What is that you ask? First bell is the first day of school in Ukraine and in most (if not all) former Soviet Union countries. It is a big tradition in the public schools.
All grades assemble at the school and a first grader along with an 11th grader (they don’t have 12 grades in Ukraine yet, but will have eventually…) These two (maybe more) students “ring” the bell to signify the beginning of the new school year.
So, all across the country, students assembled in their schoolyards to witness this occasion, as well as, other activities for the day. They even have this tradition if it falls on a Sunday.
The “real” fun begins on Monday when they attend classes and begin their studies in earnest…
