Friday was absolutely incredible!
Friday morning I continued reading in Matthew. I finished studying the Sermon on the Mount. My heart was broken about the needs here in Donetsk.
At noon, I met an American who is living here and studying Russian. As we were walking to Liverpool Restaurant, I noticed a young African following close by. I’m sure he was wondering why there were people speaking English on the streets of Donetsk! I turned and nodded my head at him and that gave him the opening to speak to us.
He introduced himself and we learned he is from Nigeria. He is here working on his Masters in Metallurgy. We learned his dorm is next to Liverpool, so he walked with us to the restaurant and then I invited him to join us. We all had a great time visiting and learning more about him and Nigeria. He is an evangelical Christian. As we walked out of the restaurant, we met a couple more of his friends from Nigeria!
The American and I talked some more. I felt bad about inviting the Nigerian to eat with us as I knew that the American wanted to talk to me. We visited for another 20 minutes on the street and hopefully I was able to encourage him. Seems that he may be dealing with culture shock and just the daily grind of living in another culture with all the challenges it presents.
From there, I walked to the stadium to pick up my tickets for the Donetsk Shakhtar vs Kyiv Dynamo game. This is THE biggest rivalry game for the two teams. I have a great plan for gameday. The stadium cafe allows one to make reservations, so I reserved a table for 1 1/2 hours prior to the game for us to have dinner there. They serve a really good hamburger there along with some other “Americana” foods.
I enjoyed walking around the stadium. It really is a beautiful stadium.
I, then, walked over to another building nearby that was has a outdoor show. They had all kinds of plants, tools, etc on display. As you can tell from the photos that we had terrific weather on Friday.
You can usually find many more businesses and stores by walking as many of the streets are lined with trees, so it is difficult to see them while driving. While walking home, I found a great auto parts store. I walked in and the young manager came over to see what I needed and I learned he spoke some English. So, we chatted for a while.
From there, I saw a sports club and stopped in to see what all their gym offered. It was a huge building with an indoor swimming pool and a gym full of equipment. I had looked at another gym earlier in the day. Each have their own pluses and minuses. Not sure which I plan to attend, but will make a decision by Monday, as I want to get started on working out again.
I continued my walk home and stopped off at the extreme sports store where a couple of friends work. We chatted for a while and then I eventually made my way to my apartment. It was a great day, filled with several surprises. Just the way I like it!
