I was in a bookstore on Wednesday. I was standing in line behind a young man and his girlfriend. His turn came and he wanted to return the gift card someone had given him for Christmas. It was hard for me to keep my composure.
After being told he couldn’t get his money back, it was my turn to check out. I joked with the cashier that I couldn’t believe what I had witnessed. He laughed and told me that several young people had been in the store already that day trying to do the same thing.
I have made a mental note to myself to never purchase a gift card from a bookstore for someone unless I know for sure they enjoy reading (or just drinking the coffee at the bookstore!!!).
This year, I went to the bank and purchased Visa gift cards for several people. I did this so that they would have the freedom to use the card at any of their favorite stores. However, I am disappointed that Wells Fargo charged $2.50 for each card when the department stores do not charge!!!
I kind of felt sorry for the young man at the store. I wonder if he ever thought that he could use that card to buy other people books or magazines and try to use it for himself.
