Memorial weekend in Astana

I went to Astana last Thursday. I attended a town hall meeting with the US Ambassador, Mr. John Ordway. He is nearing retirement and so a new ambassador is going through the process to be appointed by the senate. On Saturday the US Embassy opened its gates to US citizens living in Kstan for a Memorial picnic. The Marines grilled some fine hamburgers and chicken.

Here is Don, Diane and me in front of the embassy…

While driving around town, we found these 3 guys standing and it appears that they were put here for a purpose, however, we couldn’t figure out why…

Later in the day, we went for a walk along the river in Astana. It is a beautiful walk. Here are some random shots from the river… The last of three is the Radisson Hotel..

While walking through the park, we saw some people enjoying their time at a cafe…

One evening we visited the WW II park where the eternal flame is located.  Here is a shot from there…

We also had dinner at a wonderful Uzbek restaurant where we were able to sit around a table with cushions. Hal and I enjoy showing our Texas pride!

I had a great time visiting friends and meeting new people in Astana. As great as the city is, it was even better to get home Sunday afternoon. There truly is no place like home!!!
