Random thoughts

Friday evening a missionary couple invited me over for dinner and then to ride with them to a conference meeting. After getting turned around a couple of times, we finally arrived just a few moments late.

After the conference, we drove back toward town. It can be a little unnerving to drive at night as many of the highways and streets have little of no lighting. Such was the case last night driving back into Kiev.

We noticed the road was closed and traffic was being diverted onto the shoulder. Just about the time we got to that point where the traffic drove on the shoulder, I noticed that the police were there and he turned on his headlights about the time we arrived parallel to his car.

It was at this time that I noticed a body covered in the middle of the road. I immediately began praying. Pedestrians get hit all over the world. (I remember one time driving down I-35W in Fort Worth several years ago. Someone decided to run across 8 lanes of traffic and got hit. The freeway was shut down and was a parking lot and I was stuck in the middle of it for almost an hour.)

Well, we got back into town and as we were crossing the Metro bridge over the Dniper River, traffic was clogged and I noticed a car that had hit the barrier along the road. Well, I figured it was someone speeding, but as we got closer, we noticed a person lying in the middle of the highway. The person was still moving, but who knows.

Two people in the middle of the road within 20 minutes of each other is unsettling. It is for this reason I don’t like to drive at night.

On a happier note, Saturday morning I played basketball with some guys. While waiting on some of them, I heard a bunch of drums, like on a drum line from a marching band. This is a little unusual here and so I looked up the road and noticed some pom pom girls, and a band. I don’t know the reason for the celebration but it was fun to watch for a few minutes.

Fall is definitely here. It is cool in the mornings. It was 41 when I got up this morning. The sun peeked out for a little while but it was cloudy the rest of the day.
