Donetsk is a city with a population of just over 1 million people. It is the fourth largest city in the country. Even though there are more than one million people living here, it really does have a small town feel to it, especially when compared to Kiev (with 2.5 million).
Since I moved here in mid-July, I can’t really say that I have noticed much traffic. Even here in the center, where I live, the traffic is not too bad. During the month of August, many people vacation out of the city and it almost felt deserted at times.
I was out walking on Monday, Aug 30 and noticed many more people out of the streets. Of course, I realized with school starting in a few days, that people were picking up last minute school supplies, students returning to the city for their university classes, etc.
The next day, I had to drive somewhere and got stuck in traffic. When I returned from my appointment, I was very thankful to be going in the opposite direction of a huge traffic jam. Later I went for another walk and there were people EVERYWHERE!
I’m afraid my sleepy little town has awoken from its summer slumber…
