This morning I was reading the headlines from the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. I ran across a story about a landmark burger shop in Jacksboro.
I spent 7 years of my life in Jacksboro. I really loved that place. A small town where everyone knew everyone. I know that can cause problems (gossip, etc), but sometimes it is great as well. I fondly remember my time in Jacksboro.
I remember starting school in the first grade there (Kindergarten didn’t exist yet). Ms. Tillman was my teacher. She was firm, but did we love her!
There were some great hamburger stands near the school. All three schools (elementary, junior and high) sit on a plot of land on the west side of town. I got to eat burgers at those stands from time to time.
Which leads me to the story I read this morning. As a child, my father loved eating at the Green Frog. I remember when Dairy Queen came to town. We would eat ice cream there, but our food came from Green Frog. I faintly remember Herd’s Burgers, sitting on Main street just off the main square.
After I moved back to Wichita Falls in 1985 to attend Midwestern State University, I would eat at Herd’s every time I drove through Jacksboro. The last time was probably in 2002. I wasn’t a regular like those mentioned in the article, but I remember the smell of the room and the taste of the burgers. Time marches on…
