Victory Day is a BIG holiday in the former Soviet Union, even 61 years after the end of World War II. I had to make an airport run to meet some people on Victory Day so I was unable to attend VD celebrations in downtown Kyiv. However, I did meet this gentleman outside my apartment entrance as I was leaving for the airport.
Last year I remember being in Karaganda on the 60 anniversary and was interviewed by one of the local TV stations. I had to admit that the day isn’t as big a celebration in the US as it is here. This may be due to the fact the war was fought in Europe and not our own homefront. Of course, I’m certain that people from Hawaii may disagree with me on this.
It was a pleasure to speak with this man for a few moments and I shared with him that my father had fought in WW II as well.
